Udyam Registration — A Free Step-by-Step Guide for MSMEs
Udyam Registration — A Free Step-by-Step Guide for MSMEs

If you run a small business in India, Udyam registration is the single most useful piece of paperwork you can complete this week. It is the Government of India's official registration for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and it is the key that unlocks everything from easier bank credit to legal protection when a buyer delays your payment. The scale of adoption tells its own story: according to the Press Information Bureau, total MSME registrations under Udyam and the Udyam Assist Platform reached about 9.78 crore as of 6 October 2026, and registered MSMEs reported around 43.28 crore employment opportunities.
Yet many business owners still have not registered — often because they assume the process is complicated or costs money. Neither is true. This guide walks you through who can register, what the latest enterprise limits are, exactly which details you need, and the step-by-step process on the official portal.
The Short Answer
Udyam registration is a free, online and completely paperless registration available on the official portal, udyamregistration.gov.in. It is based on self-declaration — there are no documents to upload and no registration fee. You register using the Aadhaar number and PAN linked to your business, fill in your enterprise details, and receive a permanent registration number along with an e-certificate. There is no renewal: once registered, your Udyam registration stays valid without any annual process. Udyam replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar system on 1 July 2020.
Who Can Register? The MSME Classification Explained
Udyam registration is open to micro, small and medium enterprises engaged in manufacturing or services. Which category your business falls into depends on two figures: your investment in plant and machinery or equipment, and your annual turnover. The government revised these classification limits with effect from April 2025, substantially raising the ceilings.
Under the revised classification reported by the Press Information Bureau:
- A small enterprise can have investment of up to ₹25 crore and turnover of up to ₹100 crore.
- A medium enterprise can have investment of up to ₹125 crore and turnover of up to ₹500 crore.
- A micro enterprise is the smallest category, sitting below the small-enterprise limits.
Practically every form of business organisation can register — proprietorships, partnership firms, Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) businesses, private limited companies, LLPs, co-operative societies and self-help groups, among others. Both brand-new businesses and long-running ones are eligible; you do not need to wait until you reach a particular turnover to register. If your business grows and crosses from one category into the next, your category is re-classified based on the figures in government databases, so there is no penalty for growing after you register.
Still Holding an Old Udyog Aadhaar?
Udyam registration replaced Udyog Aadhaar on 1 July 2020. If your only MSME proof is an old Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum, treat it as outdated and complete a fresh Udyam registration — buyers, banks and government departments now ask for the Udyam Registration Number (URN) and certificate.
What You Need Before You Start
Because the process is self-declaration based and paperless, you do not need scanned documents. Keep the following details ready:
- Aadhaar number of the proprietor, the managing partner, or a director (for a company or LLP) — an OTP is sent to the mobile number linked with that Aadhaar for verification.
- PAN — the PAN of the enterprise, or of the proprietor in the case of a proprietorship. The portal verifies PAN details as part of the flow.
- Basic enterprise details — the name of the enterprise, type of organisation, postal address of the plant or office, and contact details.
- Bank account details of the enterprise.
- Activity details — you select your business activities from the National Industrial Classification (NIC) codes listed on the portal, so it helps to know how your main activities are described.
- Investment and employment figures — these are self-declared in the form; where the portal fetches data from income-tax and GST databases, the relevant fields are drawn from there.
If your business is required to have a GSTIN under GST law, keep that information handy as well, because the portal links enterprise data across government systems.
Step-by-Step: How to Complete Udyam Registration
Step 1: Open the official portal
Go to udyamregistration.gov.in and choose the option for new entrepreneurs who are not yet registered as an MSME. Be careful to use only this official government website — the registration is free, so any lookalike portal asking you to pay a "processing fee" is not the official route.
Step 2: Validate Aadhaar with OTP
Enter the Aadhaar number and the name of the Aadhaar holder (the proprietor, managing partner or director, depending on your organisation type). The portal sends an OTP to the registered mobile number; enter it to validate.
Step 3: Complete PAN verification
Select your type of organisation and enter the PAN. The portal verifies the PAN as part of the registration flow, so make sure the PAN matches the enterprise or proprietor exactly.
Step 4: Fill in the enterprise details
Enter the enterprise name, plant or unit address, office address, mobile number and email. Add the location details of your plant or office — you can add more than one unit address if your business operates from multiple locations.
Step 5: Add your business activities
Choose whether your enterprise is engaged in manufacturing, services, or both, and select the matching NIC codes for your activities. Pick the codes that best describe what you actually do — these appear on your certificate and are used to classify your enterprise.
Step 6: Declare investment and employment
Enter your investment in plant and machinery or equipment and the number of people your enterprise employs. This is a self-declaration, and together with turnover it determines whether you are classified as micro, small or medium.
Step 7: Submit and download your certificate
Tick the declaration, submit the form with the final OTP, and your registration is complete. You receive a permanent Udyam Registration Number, and the e-certificate becomes available for download from the portal. Save a copy — banks, buyers and government departments routinely ask for it.
Key Benefits of Udyam Registration
Protection against delayed payments
This is the benefit small suppliers value most. Udyam-registered micro and small enterprises get access to a dedicated legal remedy when buyers do not pay on time — the MSME Samadhaan portal. If delayed payments are already a problem for you, read our companion guide, Client Not Paying? How MSMEs Can Recover Dues Through the MSME Samadhaan Portal, after finishing this one.
Easier access to credit
MSMEs fall under priority-sector lending for banks, and a Udyam Registration Number is the standard proof of MSME status when you apply for business loans, including collateral-free credit schemes run for the sector. Registration does not guarantee a loan, but it removes the first documentation hurdle in almost every application.
Eligibility for government schemes and tenders
Central and state government schemes, subsidies and public-procurement preferences are typically restricted to registered MSMEs. Your Udyam certificate is the document that establishes eligibility.
Credibility with buyers and partners
A verifiable registration number and certificate make your business easier to onboard for larger buyers, marketplaces and lenders. It signals that your enterprise is formally recognised, which matters when a buyer is choosing between suppliers.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Paying an agent for a free process. Udyam registration costs nothing on the official portal. Intermediaries charging hefty fees add no value to a self-declaration form.
- Using an unofficial website. Several lookalike sites mimic the portal. Always check that the address is udyamregistration.gov.in.
- Aadhaar–PAN mismatches. The name and details tied to the Aadhaar and PAN you enter must match the person authorised for your organisation type, or validation will fail.
- Selecting the wrong activity codes. NIC codes should reflect your real activities; picking random codes can create problems when banks or departments verify your certificate.
- Forgetting to update your details. If your address, activities or organisation structure change, update your registration on the portal so your certificate stays accurate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Udyam registration really free?
Yes. Registration on the official portal udyamregistration.gov.in is completely free, paperless and based on self-declaration. There is no government fee at any step, and no charge for downloading your certificate.
Does Udyam registration expire or need renewal?
No. Udyam registration is permanent and does not require renewal. You only need to log back in if your enterprise details change and you want to update them.
I have an old Udyog Aadhaar. Do I still need Udyam?
Yes. Udyam registration replaced Udyog Aadhaar on 1 July 2020, and the Udyam Registration Number is what banks, buyers and government schemes now ask for. Complete a fresh registration on the Udyam portal.
Can a service business or a trader register, or is it only for manufacturers?
Both manufacturing and service enterprises can register. During the process you simply indicate whether your activities are manufacturing, services, or both, and choose the corresponding activity codes.
